September 14 - DSU campus held an Activities Fair to let students know about student associations and clubs that are available.  Amy Glanzer, Lanae Bialas, and Pat VanVleet  worked on organizing the HIM Club booth for that event and Amy Glanzer, Sarah Keppen, and Alissa Scholten staffed the booth during the Fair! (Pictured are Sarah and Alissa at the HIM Club table.) Students who stopped by the booth were offered literature about health information management and could guess the number of Q-tips in a jar to earn a piece of candy.
 

 

 

 

September 21-23 - Fall SDHIMA Meeting in Rapid City.  Congratulations to Rebecca Moore who was honored as SDHIMA's scholarship winner!
 

September 24 - Homecoming Float for "Cowboy Up" Homecoming Celebration - we had a homecoming float built in the back of a pickup truck which was a "gallows" on which we "hung" an opponent (our slogan was Hang 'Em High -- This Town's Not Big Enough For Both of Us).  Lanae Bialas, Mindy Wadsworth, Sarah Keppen, Alissa Scholten, Roxanna Williams (and members of her family), Amy Glanzer, Joyce Havlik, Dorine Bennett (and members of her family) participated in the parade and/or helped with organizing props and getting candy.

 



September 28
- Adopt-A-Highway - Lanae Bialas, Sarah Keppen, Alissa Scholten, Pat VanVleet, and Amy Glanzer picked up litter from a section of Highway 19 and then joined for a meal hosted by Joyce Havlik and Dorine Bennett at Joyce Havlik's home.
 

October 19 - Health Fair -- Students hosted a booth to check height, weight, and blood pressure of participants.  Informational literature regarding health information management and personal health records was also available.



November 6-12 - Health Information and Technology Week -- the HIM Club celebrated during a luncheon on November 8th hosted by the HIM Club faculty advisors and each person in attendance received a rose to remind us to "stop and smell the roses" in our busy schedules!

A poster was made by Rebecca Moore and displayed in the Trojan Center.  

November 29 - Blood Drive
In spite of being scheduled the day after a snowstorm, volunteers still donated blood!  It was reported that 28 pints were collected.

December 6 - Christmas Party
The club members met for a noon potluck/taco bar luncheon to celebrate Christmas.  Members who wished to donated money to buy gifts from the Angel Tree for needy children -- $50 was collected and used to buy presents for three children.

February 9 - Tour of IT Center and HIM Department
Students and faculty traveled to Sioux Falls for a tour of the IT Center for Sioux Valley Hospital USD Medical Center.  While there we visited their computer room and learned about their backup and security systems, and we also learned more about their process in moving toward an electronic health record using EPIC.  We also went to Sioux Valley Hospital USD Medical Center itself and were shown a number of technologies used in their health information management department.  We viewed demonstrations on their imaging process, analysis and coding processes, and voice recognition transcription.  It was a very interesting tour!

March 20 - Madison Community Health Fair
Lanae Bialas and Carmen Hetland prepared and presented information regarding personal health records to participants at the Madison Community Health Fair.  They prepared brochures and an educational poster display, as well as being present during the fair to answer questions.

March 30 - Assessment Day
Students who will be graduating this Spring/Summer took Major Field Assessment Exams for HIA, HIT and Coding Certificate Programs.  After testing during the morning, students were invited to enjoy a pizza lunch provided by the HIM Club. 

March 31 and April 1 - Project at hospital
Students assisted an area hospital in moving thousands of records to a new filing area of their facility.  The hospital generously provided pizza for the workers and the students enjoyed their time at the hospital.  The HIM Director was very appreciative of the assistance provided by the HIM Club.

April 7 and 8 - KeloLand Health Fair at Empire Mall
HIM Club members assisted SDHIMA with the HIM informational booth at the Health Fair held in Sioux Falls, SD.

April 9-15 - Health Information Privacy and Security Week (HIPS Week)
This is the week designated by the American Health Information Management Association to recognize the importance of privacy and security of all forms of health information.  The students celebrated with lunch on Tuesday with pizza and ice cream cake and an informational booth was set up in the Trojan Center (student union) on Wednesday.  Articles were placed in the DSU newspaper (Trojan Times) and distributed through DSU's Public Relations Office.

Graduates and officers were recognized and honored along with recipients of various scholarships and awards.  Keith Bundy provided an inspirational message and gifts were presented to the graduates. 

May 3-5 - SDHIMA Spring Convention
The Spring Convention for the South Dakota Health Information Management Association will be held in Chamberlain, SD.  Students are encouraged to attend the SDHIMA meetings for the educational experiences as well as the opportunity to network with HIM professionals.
