| September 14 | Welcome & 25th Anniversary Party | All HIM students were invited to the Mundt Foundation for pizza and cake. Everyone was welcomed to DSU and we celebrated the 25th Anniversary of HIM at DSU (it started out as "Medical Records") Time was spent in socializing and getting to know each other. |
| September 20 | Activities Fair | The HIM Club designed a "game" where students visiting our booth could place an organ in the correct place on a silhouette of a person (kind of like "Pin the Tail on the Donkey") We have brochures available and gave out pieces of candy to those who visited. |
| September 27-29 | SDHIMA meeting | The SDHIMA meeting was held in Sioux Falls in conjunction with the SDAHO Convention. There were interesting speakers, and one of the students even won a wonderful door prize! |
| October 14 | Homecoming Parade | Hey -- we're artistic as well as smart!!! The HIM Club entered a float in the parade. Going along with the Homecoming theme of "DSU Goes Hollywood" and incorporating the healthcare theme, our float was "M*A*S*H the Hardrockers!". We utilized props from the National Guards and the hospital to make our own "M*A*S*H site with a victim from the "enemy" football team! It was lots of fun and we won the prize for "Most Beautiful"!!!! |
| October 19 | Health Fair and Adopt a Highway | What a busy day!!!
From 9-4 there was a Health Fair at the DSU Campus. Our club provided "mini" medical records for all participants and we helped at the Health Fair by having a booth where visitors could check their height, weight, and body frame. At 5:00 pm the Health Club members met to clean up the litter along our "adopted" section of Highway 19. We treated ourselves to pizza after all the hard work, mmm, good! |
| November 5-11 | Health Information and Technology (HI&T) Week recognizes
the expanding roles of health information management professionals. The
week also educates the public and healthcare industry on health
information managers' significant contributions to patient care and the
bottom line.
Making a Difference with Health Information |
We held an information fair in the Trojan Center, displaying books, websites, brochures, posters, and more. The "Question of the Day" was a fun contest with a lucky winner each day -- we didn't make the questions too hard, so everyone had a pretty good chance (aren't we nice?) We socialized with ice cream and a movie to celebrate the week! |
| November 21 | Blood Drive | Count Dracula should have our recruiting skills for donations of blood! We once again sponsored a successful blood drive :-) |
| December 6 | Christmas Party | We had a good time celebrating Christmas -- games, food and gifts, who could ask for any more! |
| January 18 | Welcome the New Semester Social | We got together for food and games, just to welcome everyone back to the new semester and the new year! |
| February and March | Project for hospital | HIM students volunteered their services to help purge records at an area hospital. Thousands of old folders were taken off the shelves, making room for new activity! The donation that the facility made to the HIM Club in return for our help will be useful for future activities. |
| April 6 and 7 | Health Fair at Empire Mall | We helped with an information booth at the large health fair in Sioux Falls. Brochures on Understanding Your Health Information were distributed. |
| April 6 | Zimmfest | We can cook! (At least we can make walking tacos!) This event is held at DSU as a fundraiser to help someone in need. We had a food booth with walking tacos and pop for sale. |
| March | Project for clinic | We traveled to a rural community and worked at the medical clinic there. Our project was to take the medical record information from old folders and place it in new folders. The information was organized into sections within the folder. It was interesting to see all of the types of medical information that the clinic kept on the patients. |
| April 19 | Adopt A Highway | Spring did finally come! The snow was gone and the ditches were mostly dry so that we could pick up the litter along the section of Highway 19 that we've adopted. We worked up an appetite and enjoyed pizza afterwards! |
| April 26 | HIM Club Banquet | On Thursday, April 26th all students, faculty, and staff of the Health Information Management Programs were invited to join in the HIM Club’s annual end-of-the-year banquet. At this event, the leadership of the HIM Club is recognized and various award recipients are congratulated. The graduates from the HIM Programs receive special attention , including a commemorative DSU gift for each. Over $400 of awards were presented to HIM Club members for their participation in the variety of events the club sponsors. A cash award was presented to a HIM student who provided recruitment efforts at area schools as part of the “Each One Reach One” program. Wayne Pauli, an instructor at DSU, was invited by the students to share thoughts and comments to the students as they begin their careers after graduation or look forward to continuing their education. |
| May 5 | Blood Drive | We sponsored another blood drive on the DSU Campus -- it's definitely a good cause and provides a needed service! |
