September 4, 1997 Ice Cream Social The ice cream social was a way to socialize and provide prospective members to meet current members in the club.
September 13, 1997 Relay for Life This was a community walk for cancer awareness. Several members walked or sold luminaries that were used to light the walking track. Very touching event!
September 23, 1997 Adopt-A-Highway Members picked up trash on Highway 19 near Madison -- then went out for pizza!
September 25-26, 1997 State SDHIMA meeting in Sioux Falls, SD Faculty and students attended the state health information management association meeting. The purpose of participating in the meeting is to give students' exposure to HIM activities and issues at the state level. In addition, attending the meeting gives students the opportunity to network with HIM professionals.
October 1, 1997 Wellness Fair The Wellness Fair is conducted for the main purpose of promoting health awareness.
October 11, 1997 Homecoming Parade The HIM club entered a float in the parade. We won a prize!!
December 9, 1997  Blood Drive The Bloodmobile came to DSU! There were 37 units of blood that were donated! The turnout for the blood drive was exceptional!
October 31, 1997 Bake Sale A bake sale was held as a fundraiser for the HIM Club.
November 3-7, 1997 National HIM Week Lots of fun activities -- gave prizes to members each day!
November 4, 1997 HIM Club Social and Tour The HIM Club took an entire day to tour Sioux Valley Hospital and Children's Care Hospital. The club had a wonderful time!
December 11, 1997 Christmas Party We had pizza and exchanged Christmas gifts. Officers for 1998 were elected.
January 1998 Assistance to Student Health Office HIM Club members were asked to volunteer to help the Student Health Office to input data into computerized immunization database and to serve on the Student Health Advisory Committee.
February 1998 Valentine Candy Grams The HIM Club sold valentine cards with candy in them and delivered the cards to the happy recipients for Valentine's Day.
February 20-22, 1998 Purge project Twenty-six members and advisors of the HIM Club worked a total of 211 hours to remove the records of 67, 619 patients from the filing selves of a hospital and the records were taken to an off-site storage facility. Lots of work, but fun too!!
March 19, 1998 HIV/AIDS Program The Student Health Advisory Committee, the Math & Science Club, and the HIM Club cosponsored an educational program on HIV/AIDS. The presentation was well attended.
March 20, 1998 Raffle Drawing With cooperation and donations from Nicky's Restaurant & Lounge and West Twin Theatre, the HIM Club had a raffle for "Dinner and a Movie!!" The lucky winner received movie tickets and dinners for two people as well as some cash for a fun-filled evening.
March 27 and 28, 1998 Trip to Minneapolis, MN We took a van and two cars to Minneapolis, MN for a great weekend! Not only did we attend AHIMA's Regional Team Talks and get to network with national leaders and other professionals, we also toured two hospitals in the Minneapolis area. One of our tours was led by former DSU grad -- doing good!!! Of course, we also managed to find some time to visit the Mall of America for some shopping J !
April 2 and 3, 1998 SDHIMA meeting in Chamberlain, SD The state association meeting was held at a resort on the shores of the Missouri River. Another great opportunity for meeting with people and learning. The HIM Club prepared a booklet of resumes for graduates looking for positions and these booklets, which were distributed at Team Talks, were also distributed here. For a doorprize, we donated a great denim shirt embroidered with Health Information Management above the pocket.
April 6, 1998 Blood Drive The bloodmobile was back for more blood. The HIM Club is proud to sponsor this event twice a year.
April 21, 1998 Banquet The HIM Club held their Spring banquet with Patti Brooks, RRA, serving as the keynote speaker. Her motivational talk certainly capped a wonderful evening of recognition for the Club. Graduates, club officers, and a variety of award winners were recognized, and Dr. Tunheim, DSU's President attended to present the club's Certificate of Merit award.
April 28, 1998 Adopt-A-Highway A beautiful Spring day found the HIM Club on the roadside completing another of their twice-yearly projects, as we cleaned up the trash. Of course, we rewarded ourselves with pizza!
June 26, 1998 Board of Regents The HIM Club President, Jennifer Becker, and one of the advisors, Rose Goeden, attended the South Dakota Board of Regents meeting to receive the SD Board of Regents's Student Organizational Leadership Award. Way to go!!!
